The Con Man Conneth

“I’m going to keep doing what I’m doing. At the end it’s either going to work or I’m going to have a very, very nice long vacation.”

Donald Trump, in a phoned-in interview with CNBC today, showing, for the umpteenth time, how much he cares about the country or anybody besides himself.

True to his character, he will continue his depraved downward spiral of inciting hate, violence, and mass disorder, consequences be damned. At least in warning us about it, he is honest. Sort of.

“Look, all I do is tell the truth. I’m a truth teller. All I do is tell the truth.”

And if that “truth telling” doesn’t “work” and he is not elected after all, he will go on a nice long vacation, leaving behind the sea of rage and smoldering ruins of civility, no doubt feeling great as always about a job well done.

He is a killer, that Donny, and a king, as his proud daddy said. But even Trump Sr. would remind his boy not to be so tough; even he, the callous and ruthless manipulator, was concerned about his favorite son’s aggression and unbridled desire for power and adulation. Donny should have listened to his old man. If he could, that is. We’d all be better off now.

There must have been a typo in his campaign slogan, and Donny either didn’t notice it or left it there on purpose, the con man that he is. Because it should have indeed read Make America Grate Again; and he has surely delivered on that promise already, many times over. Mission Accomplished, to borrow another empty slogan, from another conscience-deficient leader blind to his own hubris and folly, whose legacy of death and destruction we have still not grappled with, allergic as we are to any admission of guilt. That guy’s vices pale, however, in comparison with those of our presumptive Killer King who has promised us, repeatedly, a Trumpian Victory. And he is a man of his word. Sort of.

  1. Wikipedia: Although Bush stated at the time “Our mission continues” and “We have difficult work to do in Iraq,” he also stated that it was the end to major combat operations in Iraq. A banner stating “Mission Accomplished” was used as a backdrop to the speech yet it was requested by the crew and referred specifically to the aircraft carrier’s 10-month deployment and not the war itself. Bush’s assertion—and the sign itself—became controversial after guerrilla warfare in Iraq increased during the Iraqi insurgency. Accident, not design; yet he did not demand a change of backdrop. Quibbles?

Given that Mr Trump’s self-satisfaction is probably limitless, I hope for his happiness on holiday rather than happiness in the Oval office.

    • Methinks there are no accidents in politics, Clare.

Actually, someone much wiser in such matters said somewhere in the past and I would be able to look it up if I didn’t have a splitting headache.

      No, seriously.

Not only that banner was meant to signal our “Great Success!” (imagine Borat giving his two thumbs up), but Bush even dressed up for the occasion in a military uniform, with what some speculated a male, um, enhancement inserted in the right place. Strategery, as Dubya called it.

That war was a PR-managed spectacle, showing, as clearly as it was possible, the use of crude propaganda to justify the state’s murderous aims. What we saw on TV and read about in our papers had exactly zero resemblance to reality — and that itself is typical for any public “management” of modern war efforts.

What was unusual (I thought) was the crudeness of it. The Jessica Lynch Rescue!, the toppling of the Saddam’s statue, the obscene language of “collateral damage,” none of it worked as intended — but, again, that also did not matter. This offensive unreality was created perhaps even more to assuage the guilt of the war-makers themselves than convince us, the public, of the righteousness of their evil deeds.

Yes, Trump’s happiness on holiday, preferably somewhere far away, is something to hope for. Unfortunately, his character makes such happiness impossible. His inner imperative is to strive for adulation or power or else (that “else” is unleashing his sadistic punishment for the lack of such adulation on everyone around him).

Ouch. Gotta double my Excedrin dose. Do you Brits have an Excedrin equivalent for migraines? It is made of aspirin, paracetamol, and caffeine — and it often works.

  2. Donny’s staff and the RNC leaders are meeting in Florida today to help get Donny’s campaign “back on point”. Donny, of course, won’t be there. They don’t get it. Donny’s campaign IS on point: Donny’s point that is. His campaign is about him and only him. At this point, I’m fairly certain he won’t participate in a single debate with Clinton. He knows he’ll get eaten alive and would rather not bother. He doesn’t care. He cares only about himself and spreading his brand of vile hate wherever he goes. I despise him.

    • You know, the sheer notion of Trump “debating” any sentient being has become unbearably offensive to even contemplate. We, the people, should have more respect for ourselves that allow such things to happen.

  3. After insisting Obama is indeed the founder of ISIS multiple times, ‘lil Donny is now back tracking and blaming the media for seeing he was merely being sarcastic. That this sociopathic monster is still being backed by the GOP and not being physically locked up in a mental hospital is a clear sign of just how far our society has fallen. I’ve lost words for this.
